Rei Kuroda
Japan
Short Film Competition Grand Prize
ー What made you decide to apply to the Nikon Photo Contest?
It was hard to release works during the COVID-19 pandemic, so I entered the contest because I wanted to somehow release a film that I made with my friends.
ー Do you have any episode when taking the award-winning photo/film?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we filmed the work where there were few people. The film was made by only three people, including the actress. We discussed everything from the concept of the work to the filming itself, and our families and others also helped us film it.
ー Please tell us about your recent activities. Have there been any changes in your career after winning the award?
Two of the three went to study abroad. As a result of winning this contest, people of not only in Japan but also around the world saw our work, which made us feel the world outside Japan closer and motivated the decision to study abroad.
I recently put on an exhibition with a German friend I met while studying abroad as an exchange student in Vienna, Austria. It was an installation art exhibition that included not only film and photos but also sculptures.
As a result of showing everyone the award-winning film of the Nikon Photo Contest during my presentation, people from different countries also understood the atmosphere and concept of my film.
ー What does 'taking photos/films' mean to you?
To me, film is a means of expression that enables us to experience the world in a more expansive way than words alone can.
ー Could you give a message to those who are considering participation in the Nikon Photo Contest?
I think people should try entering the contest as an opportunity for people around the world to see your work. After all, who wins is based on nothing more than the compatibility between the works and the judges.
