People of the Sea

Story

Kamo Port, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. I photographed fishermen and the people involved in the fishing industry at this port situated in my hometown of Tsuruoka. The sunburnt and deeply wrinkled faces of the fishermen I met revealed to me the unforgiving nature of the sea and the way they live their lives around it. I captured these men's impressive appearance at this "fishing port" — a space connecting the primordial sea and my hometown.

Comment

I was born and raised around Kamo Port, Tsuruoka City in Yamagata Prefecture. The sunburnt and deeply wrinkled faces of the fishermen and those who work on the sea convey the harshness of the sea and their way of life. I took these pictures of men I met in the ‘fishing port’ that connects my hometown with the primordial sea. This work is not just five pictures, I shot many other people as well, but it portrays above all the time I spent with these ‘people of the sea’. It is an important work which taught me a lot while I take my first steps as a photographer. I feel that the image of these people will be burnt into me from now on, becoming a signpost for me as a photographer and as a person.
